Driving Rules in the UAE

• Carry your driving license, car registration and insurance;
• Follow the speed limits: on small streets – up to 40 km/h, on main roads – up to 60-80 km/h in cities, 100-140 km/h on highways;
• Maintain a safe distance, stay in your lane and give a signal when you change lanes;
• Obey traffic signals; red-light violations carry heavy penalties;
• Give priority at roundabouts to vehicles which are already inside;
• Zero alcohol tolerance while driving. Violators face fine 10000-20000 AED (~$2723-5446), vehicle confiscation or even enprisonment;
• Aggressive driving, rude gestures, arguing in traffic jams and shoulder overtaking are also fined;
• Traffic cameras monitor speeding, tailgating and other violations;
• Use your phone hands-free only;
• Every passenger is required to wear a seatbelt. Children under 4 years old must sit in child seats; children under 10 years old cannot sit in the front seat;
• Move aside for emergency vehicles and park only in designated spaces.

• Learn the traffic rules. Familiarize yourself with UAE driving regulations beforehand to avoid fines. Always keep your driver’s license and vehicle documents with you in case the traffic police request them.
• Inspect the car. Check the vehicle thoroughly inside and out when you pick it up. Take photos or videos and make sure any scratches or damage are recorded in the handover report.
• Be mindful of the heat. High temperatures can cause mobile phones, tablets and food to overheat or spoil. Avoid leaving electronics or perishables inside the car.
• Choose the right insurance. Make sure your rental includes sufficient coverage especially for collision and theft.
• Pick the right vehicle. Consider the size and type of car for your itinerary especially if you plan desert trips or long highway drives.
